Original Exterior Components Retained And Restored.
This Bloomfield Hills, Michigan project focused on preserving the property’s existing windows, doors and architectural details. The gallery documents deteriorated wood, failed coatings, corroded metal components and assemblies that required careful disassembly before the underlying conditions could be addressed.
Removable parts were labeled by opening, allowing each assembly to be prepared, repaired and returned to its correct location.
Failure Extended Beneath The Visible Coating.
The existing finish concealed corrosion, damaged joints and deteriorated wood around several openings. Ivy and dense landscaping limited access to parts of the exterior, while the glass, brick, stone and adjacent materials had to remain protected.
The windows could not be treated as a single painted surface. Frames, removable metal components, wood surrounds, seals and glazing details each required an appropriate restoration method.
The work also extended to wood garage doors and a decorative metal-and-glass enclosure.
Disassembled, Cataloged And Restored By Component.
- Protected leaded glass and adjacent materials before preparation
- Removed and labeled weatherstripping and detachable window components
- Stripped failed coatings and corrosion back to a sound substrate
- Opened damaged areas to reveal the extent of wood deterioration
- Repaired localized sections rather than replacing complete assemblies
- Prepared and refinished window frames and surrounding woodwork
- Repaired and refinished the existing wood garage doors
- Prepared decorative metal framing and exterior architectural details
- Primed, sanded and reinspected surfaces before finish applications
- Returned labeled components to their corresponding openings
Existing Assemblies Preserved Through Detailed Restoration.
The gallery documents the work normally concealed beneath a finished exterior: disassembly, cataloging, wood repair, corrosion removal, surface preparation and component refinishing.
Existing windows, doors and architectural components were retained wherever their condition allowed, with deterioration addressed section by section before the exterior finish was rebuilt.
