Paint Incompatibility

  • Manifestations
    • When a latex paint is applied on top of numerous coats of oil-based or alkyd paint, there is a notable loss of adhesion.
  • Causes
    • Covering more than three or four layers of old paint that is oil-based or alkyd with one coat of water-based latex paint.
    • The existing layers of old paint might lift up from the substrate to the surface.
  • Solutions
    • Applying a new coat of oil-based or alkyd paint. Alternatively, remove all layers of old paint and start over by preparing the surface correctly.
    • Clean it, sand it and prime the spots that require it.
    • Apply a coat of the highest quality exterior latex paint.
