Frosting
Manifestations
- It is a white substance that looks like salt and appears on a painted surface.
- Any color of paint is susceptible. It is, however, not as apparent on white paint or the lightest tinted colors.
- When it appears on masonry, it is often perceived as efflorescence.
- Causes
- Raindrops, dew or other moisture, which impacts the painted surface.
- Using paints of a dark color and formulated with a calcium carbonate extender.
- Applying paint that is a dark color over a coat of primer or paint containing calcium carbonate.
- Solutions
- This stubborn problem is not easy to wash off. Even after being successfully removed, it can become a recurrent condition.
- It may bleed through any additional layer of paint. Sometimes it can even interfere with adhesion.
- The optimal way to remove frosting is by using a wire brush on masonry or sandpaper on wooden surfaces.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- Coat with an alkyd-based primer.
- Allow to dry for recommended length of time.
- Apply premium quality exterior paint.
